Job Introduction
BBC Monitoring (BBCM) is looking for a Journalist for its Kyiv-based Europe team on a fixed-term contract to produce a range of content for the BBCM website, other BBC platforms and commercial customers.
BBCM provides news and information based on our monitoring of open source media from over 150 countries in more than 70 languages. It is an important part of the BBC's newsgathering operation, with journalists based in the UK and in international offices, and provides content for a range of BBC platforms.
Our extensive operation enables us to provide insightful and reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news.
Our round-the-clock monitoring of TV, radio, press, digital media and news agencies is also provided to commercial clients and the UK and US governments.

Main Responsibilities
We are looking for a Journalist to produce engaging and insightful content in a variety of formats, based on the monitoring of vernacular sources in Ukraine and other European countries.
You will use various tools and techniques to track news from and about Ukrainian and other European media, identify key developments and trends and write reports for the BBC Monitoring website and other BBC platforms.
You will be a skilled editor, able to sub contributions from freelancers quickly and accurately.
You will also come up with original ideas and creative treatments for ongoing and emerging narratives, including data-driven products and multimedia elements.
You will work with the Senior Journalist Team Manager and the rest of the team to interpret feedback from BBCM’s customers and respond in a timely manner.

Are you the right candidate?
- You will have experience as a journalist or media monitor
- You will have an in-depth knowledge of Ukrainian domestic and international politics and media
- You will have fluent Ukrainian and excellent written and spoken English and the ability to translate and summarise Ukrainian-language audiovisual content and social media posts quickly and accurately in colloquial English
- You will have very good knowledge of Russian
- You will have very good news awareness and knowledge of BBC values, editorial guidelines and BBCM user interests, with the ability to select, prioritise, and process relevant stories and data, primarily in written form
- Willingness and enthusiasm to embrace new ways of working and new technology are essential, as are good team-working skills
- Knowledge of another European language, subbing skills, on air and multimedia skills, as well as experience analysing complex data and presenting findings in English are desirable
